Solar for flats: one rooftop system, every flat powered

SolShare shares a single solar PV array & battery system across multiple flats. No inverter per flat, no separate roof space per home.  Built for councils, housing associations and developers.

Why blocks of flats were left out of the solar revolution

Solar PV was designed for one roof feeding one meter. In a block of flats the "one roof, one metre" rule meant a separate inverter and cable run for every home, plant rooms that filled up, and a cost per flat that killed the business case. So houses got panels and flats stayed at EPC D.

SolShare removes that constraint. One array on the roof, one shared system behind the meter, and every flat gets its share of the power.

How solar for flats works with SolShare

One array, one inverter

A single rooftop PV system, sized for the block, with one inverter (or a handful for larger blocks) instead of one per flat.

lightning-bolt-1

SolShare shares the power

SolShare reads demand in real time and routes solar to the flats that are using electricity right now, so less is exported and more is used in the building.

box-up

Every flat gets its own allocation

Each flat is guaranteed its share of the system (its own kWp allocation) and residents keep their choice of energy supplier.

What it does for your block

Lift every flat 5–20 SAP points

SolShare is recognised as a direct solar PV connection to individual flats, helping projects improve SAP scores and jump EPC bands easily for an entire block. With SAP uplift from around £200 per point, it’s one of the most cost-effective ways to increase SAP scores.

Custom solar allocation per flat

Allocate the exact amount of solar each flat needs to meet SAP and EPC goals.

An efficient and cost-effective route to achieving EPC A targets in multi-unit developments.

Battery-ready

Integrate rooftop solar with community batteries to maximise energy savings.

Store excess solar energy and make it available when residents need it most, increasing self-consumption and reducing grid reliance.

Cut tenant bills by up to 60%

Residents use free solar electricity during the day.  With SolShare alone, savings can reach up to 40%.

Add a community battery and savings reach up to 60%.

Blocks that have already done it

16 SAP points for 3.5% of the budget

Shared solar improved EPC ratings by 16 SAP points for 3.5% of a £3.5M retrofit budget.

Going beyond rebates

We've been using the word "rebates" a lot, but government programs that help pay for rooftop solar, batteries, and other energy efficiency projects go beyond just rebates.

Here's some help in understanding the types of programs.

Rebate
A partial refund of money spent that reduces the cost of an eligible product or installation.
Discount
A reduction applied to the purchase price, so you pay less up front.
Grant

A lump sum of money that you can spend on your project that does not have to be repaid.

Financing
A loan backed by the government that is usually either interest-free or low-interest.

Testimonials

"We installed just 3 inverters with 3 SolShares to serve 35 properties. If it wasn’t for Allume, we couldn’t have done it, there simply wasn’t space to fit 35 inverters."

“As a developer, we are proud to be bringing such a progressive scheme to the market. We have proactively worked with the various elements to bring the best technology to the scheme, and we’re thrilled with the results.”

"Because the system shares free solar energy across the whole building, everyone saves more on bills than if we just had lots of individual little solar systems on the roof, each feeding one flat."

Frequently asked questions

Find quick answers about SolShare, the world’s first technology for sharing rooftop solar in UK flats.
How many flats can SolShare connect?
SolShare is designed for blocks with 6 or more flats. Each SolShare can serve up to 15 flats.
Does every flat need its own inverter when installing solar PV on flats?
No. That is the point of SolShare. One inverter (or a few for big blocks) feeds SolShare, which shares the power between flats.
Does each flat get an MCS certificate and SAP credit with SolShare?
Yes. Each flat receives its own MCS certificate and its guaranteed allocation is what earns the SAP PV credit, typically 5–20 points per flat.
Can residents keep their own energy supplier when SolShare is installed?
Yes. SolShare works behind the meter. Residents stay on whichever supplier and tariff they choose and simply buy less from the grid.
Does shared solar work on existing blocks as well as new build?

Yes. SolShare is suitable to new builds and retrofits.

Is shared solar compliant with the DNO and G99?

Yes. SolShare is the basis for G99 Issue 2 Section 7.8, has been reviewed by Ofgem and is accepted by all major UK DNOs.

Do residents have to join a specific electricity retailer when using SolShare?

No. Residents maintain freedom of choice and can stay with any UK energy supplier. They also keep all market protections and benefits provided to vulnerable electricity customers.

What funding is available for SolShare?

SolShare qualifies for major UK grants, including the Warm Homes Plan in England, Optimised RetroFit Programme (ORP) in Wales and Social Housing Net Zero Heat Fund in Scotland and the Local Power Plan.

Is there a monitoring portal with SolShare?
Yes. The SolCentre monitoring portal provides energy and bill savings data from site to flat level. This transparency is often a requirement for Warm Homes and other social housing initiatives. These metrics shows measurable impact for Government reporting, without manual admin.
